What is the Swiss Travel Pass Youth?
The Swiss Travel Pass Youth is the youth-priced national visitor pass. Eligible travellers under 25 receive a published 30% reduction against the regular pass fare. Consecutive and Flex versions let you match the ticket to your pace.
Coverage and what to check
The youth price does not create a different network. The selected pass type determines validity and benefits. Reservations and supplements remain separate where required.
Is it right for your itinerary?
Build your route around the experiences you want. A few nights in Lucerne and Interlaken can combine city walks, lakes and mountain outings. For a larger loop, count the transfer days when comparing consecutive and Flex options.
Youth eligibility: age matters, not student status
The youth offer is for travellers under 25 on the first day of validity. It is an age-based fare, so being a student is not the qualifying test. Check the traveller's date of birth against the intended start date and carry identification that confirms age.
The Swiss visitor-pass residency conditions also apply: the product is intended for residents outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. A group can travel together while holding different fare categories, provided each traveller has valid travel entitlement for the same journey and class.
What the youth reduction includes
The published 30% reduction applies to the corresponding standard Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Travel Pass Flex fare. It is not a promise of 30% off your entire holiday, restaurant bills or every reservation. The transport network and benefits follow the pass you select.
- Consecutive Youth: choose 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 consecutive days for a continuous period of travel.
- Flex Youth: choose the same day counts as selected days within one month; benefits apply on activated days.
- Class choice: compare the appropriate first- or second-class youth fare with the class your companions will use.
A realistic budget for a Swiss youth trip
Separate your budget into transport, beds, food and activities. Put covered train journeys in the pass column, but keep panoramic seat reservations and any extra mountain fares in a separate column. This prevents a discounted pass from looking like an all-inclusive holiday package.
For an illustrative route through Zurich, Lucerne and Interlaken, count the transfer days first. Then decide whether your days between transfers involve covered boats, museums or local transport. A day spent walking around town has a different transport value from a day with several train connections.
Booking for friends with different ages
Enter each passenger accurately and review every issued ticket. Someone who qualifies for Youth does not make an older companion eligible. Agree on travel dates and class before buying, then arrange seats together where a reservation is required. If one person changes plans, check that person's ticket conditions rather than assuming the whole group has identical refund rights.
Planning a trip with different ages
Compare tickets for each traveller rather than applying one age category to the entire group. Younger adults can review Youth options while older companions compare the Swiss Travel Pass or Flex Pass. If the group has fixed accommodation, begin with the journeys between those bases and then add optional excursions.
How to plan and book
Check eligibility for your travel dates and carry proof of age. Do not use age bands in a general rail search form as a substitute for the Swiss Travel Pass Youth rules.
- Choose travel dates and check route coverage.
- Compare the fare for each traveller and travel class.
- Check reservations, activation and purchase conditions.
- Save tickets and booking details before departure.
