What is the Swiss Half Fare Card?
The Swiss Half Fare Card is a visitor discount card valid for one month. It reduces eligible ticket prices rather than replacing tickets. You still buy a ticket for each journey.
Coverage and what to check
Many train, bus and boat journeys are available at half fare, with reductions on many mountain services. Short urban journeys and individual services may have different reductions. Check the current information for your route.
Is it right for your itinerary?
Compare the card cost plus all discounted tickets with a pass or full-fare tickets. Add mountain outings and local transfers to both sides. A quiet day at your base does not use up a limited allocation of travel days.
Where the Half Fare Card can help
The one-month Swiss Half Fare Card offers reduced fares across eligible trains, buses, boats and many mountain transport services, with participating urban transport also included in the discount network. Check the exact journey: not every ticket or special offer is reduced by precisely half.
The benefit is flexibility across a longer stay. You do not allocate a fixed number of pass days, and a day without transport does not consume an entitlement. You buy the tickets you need when you travel, subject to the fare and availability of your chosen ticket.
How to calculate whether it is worth buying
- List your planned journeys, including airport transfers, lake boats and mountain excursions.
- Find the ordinary ticket price and the eligible reduced price for each journey.
- Add the reductions to calculate your expected saving.
- Compare that saving with the card price, keeping reservations and other charges separate.
As a simplified rule, if every journey were reduced by exactly 50%, ordinary fares would need to total more than twice the card price to produce a net saving. Real itineraries contain different reductions and offers, so use actual ticket prices before deciding.
Using the card when buying tickets
Select the eligible Half Fare reduction in the ticket purchase process and make sure the card covers the journey date. Carry both the card and the resulting ticket. A booking confirmation for the card is not a substitute for any journey ticket you still need.
Check class and route as well as price. If comparing a restricted advance ticket with a flexible ticket, record those conditions alongside the cost. A lower fare can be less useful when your plan depends on clear mountain weather.
Combining it with other products
A Saver Day Pass has a version for eligible Half Fare holders, which can be worth pricing for a busy travel day. Compare that day-pass price with the reduced individual tickets you would otherwise buy. Do not assume an advertised starting price will remain available for your date.
Families should also review the Swiss Family Card. The adult must still hold the necessary journey ticket. Unlike the Swiss Travel Pass, the Half Fare Card does not provide a general bundle of free museum admissions.
Half Fare Card versus Swiss Travel Pass
Make two totals for the same itinerary. For the Half Fare option, add the card price to each applicable reduced ticket. For the Swiss Travel Pass, add the pass price and any uncovered travel or supplements. Compare the flexibility as well as the totals: some lower-priced tickets have purchase conditions that matter if your plans change.
How to plan and book
Choose the correct reduced fare when booking and carry the card with your ticket. This one-month visitor product differs from Switzerland’s annual Half Fare Travelcard. Check eligibility and the start date before payment.
- Choose travel dates and check route coverage.
- Compare the fare for each traveller and travel class.
- Check reservations, activation and purchase conditions.
- Save tickets and booking details before departure.
