What is the Swiss Family Card?
The product commonly searched for as the Swiss Family Pass is officially the Swiss Family Card. It is a complimentary card for eligible children travelling with a parent holding a qualifying Swiss Travel Pass, Flex Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card.
Coverage and what to check
Children aged 6 to 15 travel under the card’s conditions with at least one qualifying parent. Children under six generally travel free. Check separate reservation charges and the rules for each mountain excursion.
Is it right for your itinerary?
Begin with the adults’ itinerary and choose their ticket first. Then add the eligible children when arranging the card. One or two bases can make a family holiday easier, with fewer station changes and more time to settle in.
Why the Swiss Family Card is useful
The main benefit is reducing eligible children's transport costs while travelling with a qualifying parent. It can simplify a holiday with several rail transfers and outings because the children's entitlement is linked to the parent's qualifying visitor product.
It is not a standalone adult pass, a hotel discount card or a general family attraction ticket. Think of the decision in two stages: select the right transport product for the parent, then arrange the children's accompanying entitlement.
Match the card to the parent's ticket
- Swiss Travel Pass: plan family outings within the parent's valid pass period and check the exact route.
- Swiss Travel Pass Flex: check that the parent has activated the day before relying on the linked benefits.
- Swiss Half Fare Card: the parent still needs the appropriate reduced ticket for each journey. The discount card alone is not an adult travel ticket.
For mountain excursions, verify the parent and child rules together. A parent's discounted mountain fare and a child's accompanying entitlement are different things. Ask about any reservation or activity charge separately rather than assuming a transport benefit includes everything at the summit.
Before you book for children
List every child's date of birth and identify which qualifying parent will accompany them. Children aged six up to their sixteenth birthday fall within the Family Card age range; under-sixes generally travel free under the relevant operator's conditions. Older teenagers need their own suitable ticket or pass.
Include the children when arranging the parent's product, request the Family Card, and inspect the documents you receive. Keep the card, parent's pass or card, any required adult tickets and identification together. Do not assume that entering children in a search automatically means the correct document has been issued.
Planning a manageable family day
A simple example is a rail journey to Lucerne, time by the lake and one boat outing that fits the published timetable. Choose a return sailing with a comfortable connection and leave space for meals and breaks. Before adding a mountain excursion, check its operating times and the individual family fares.
If children travel with grandparents, another adult or independently, investigate the appropriate alternative child ticket. The Swiss Family Card's parent requirement should not be assumed to extend to every accompanying adult.
Choose the parent’s travel product first
A family comparison starts with the adults’ transport needs. Look at the Swiss Travel Pass, Flex Pass and Half Fare Card, then check the Family Card arrangements for the children. Keep a separate line in your budget for reservations and activities rather than assuming every part of the holiday is covered.
How to plan and book
Request the card when buying the parent’s qualifying product and check all children are correctly listed. A grandparent or other adult should check alternative child tickets instead of assuming the parent rule applies.
- Choose travel dates and check route coverage.
- Compare the fare for each traveller and travel class.
- Check reservations, activation and purchase conditions.
- Save tickets and booking details before departure.
